The Magic Planet Community     Go to Community Preview and Customer Login

Global Imagination believes that the relationship we have with our customers is the most important part of our business. Our goal is to make sure that customers, both existing and new, receive a high impact return on their Magic Planet investment in the shortest possible time. To that end, Community is a place to share exhibits, “stock footage” and animation templates, as well as ideas, expertise and feedback.

Both existing and new customers gain ready-made tailorable exhibit solutions and promotional media, as well as access to a broad base of expertise that will help leverage their efforts. The Magic Planet Community is a place where our customers can interact easily with each other and with Global Imagination.

In concrete terms, the Magic Planet Community consists of two things:  first, a repository of exhibits, animations and templates contributed by our customers, our partners, and by Global Imagination; and second, a searchable bulletin board where customers can ask questions, look for answers, and chat with other members.

The repository of exhibits, animations and templates serves two purposes. First, it serves to reduce the cost of building exhibits and promotional media, and second, it exposes an organization’s work to potentially hundreds of thousands of people who view the Magic Planet annually.

By starting from a ready-made template that’s very close to what they want, customers can significantly reduce the time and money it takes to complete their exhibit or media, and begin recouping their investment.  In some cases, they can have a complete, polished exhibit up and running the same day that they install their Magic Planet.

Our customers were the first to express the benefits of exposing their organization’s work to potentially hundreds of thousands of addition people annually who see the Magic Planet.  Customers understood that if they produced exhibits and animations used by other Community members, they would receive “brand awareness” from the ultimate viewer of the exhibit.  For example, when NASA produces an exhibit such as their solar system exhibit, the touchscreen has the NASA logo.  As a result, whenever the exhibit is seen, the viewer associates the exhibit with both NASA and the organization who displays the exhibit.  A number of organizations have chosen to use NASA’s exhibit as the basis for their own “tour of the solar system”.  In this way, tens of thousands of additional people see NASA’s exhibit every year as a result of NASA’s commitment to the Magic Planet Community.

The Community is also a place that customers can go to access to a broad range of expertise in a wide range of disciplines – in other words, they can use the Community as a resource when they need help.  It’s an “active” knowledge base.  If they can’t find an answer by searching through the various topics, they can post a question and get a quick reply.  In addition, they can post “domain specific” questions - questions that are specific to their particular expertise (e.g. “how would you suggest I illustrate dinosaur migration?  Where can I go to get the background data?”, or “I’d like to have a background of fireworks for my product launch video on the Magic Planet. Where can I get it, or how do I create it?”).  They can expect an answer, sample or template from another Community member with similar expertise.  As with the repository, this can substantially reduce the time and effort that goes into building and maintaining an exhibit or media.

Exhibits

EARTHQUAKE! Life on a Restless Planet
The exhibit is designed to give the public a "real feel" for earthquakes and the cutting-edge seismic research taking place at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. A variety of interactive displays help visitors explore what causes earthquakes, why they occur where they do, how scientists study earthquakes, and how this research benefits society. By providing a global perspective, the Magic Planet is especially effective for facilitating understanding of key exhibit concepts, including plate tectonics, and the relationship between seismic activity and plate boundaries.

Birch Aquarium at Scripps has kindly agreed to make its Magic Planet exhibit content, including EARTHQUAKE! Life on a Restless Planet, available to other Magic Planet customers.

Chabot Space and Science Center is using the Magic Planet primarily for educational outreach in their classrooms, at local schools, and summer camp projects. Among other topics, they use the Magic Planet to illustrate global climate change to elementary school students. They also use the Magic Planet for fundraising at special donor events around the San Francisco Bay Area. Chabot has developed several in-house animations. For example, they've developed an animation which brings to life an ancient Chinese celestial map, originally in stone, using a spherical sky projection - the first time its been seen this way in over 2000 years.

Chabot Space & Science Center has kindly agreed to make Magic Planet exhibits and animations available to other Magic Planet customers.

FSU's Center for Atmospheric and Oceanographic Prediction Studies utilizes the Magic Planet to make the complex science of global climate variability intuitively understandable to students, the press, funding organizations, government officials, and the general public. The Center's Magic Planet is used to visualize a wide range of topics including the interrelationships between sea surface temperature and wind, storm formation and progress, and global anomalies of ocean temperature.

FSU's Center for Atmospheric and Oceanographic Prediction Studies has kindly agreed to make its Magic Planet animations and content available to other Magic Planet customers.

NASA uses their Magic Planets in a wide variety of ways: in lobbies, visitor center exhibits and tradeshows, education and outreach, at satellite launches, press conferences, and so on. It has been used to help tell NASA's "stories" in a more compelling way to children and adults alike. It's been used to brief senators, congressmen, and even the President of the United States.

In addition to the wealth of global and planetary imagery available from NASA for use with the Magic Planet, NASA has developed three main exhibits.

The Mars-Earth Connection
For the landing of the Mars Rovers, NASA developed a Magic Planet exhibit whose purpose is to illustrate the Mars-Earth Connection - to illustrate what we can learn about the Earth through our investigation of Mars. The exhibit is on standing display in the NASA Ames Visitor Center. It has also been at NASA Headquarters.

Aura - To Understand and Protect the Air We Breathe
Developed for the Aura satellite launch, NASA's Aura exhibit has been instrumental in NASA's effort to communicate Aura's mission. The exhibit was on hand at the NASA launch for viewing by the press, dignitaries, and the viewing public. Afterwards, it was on standing display in the lobby of NASA headquarters and at Goddard Space Flight Center.

Earth, Moon, Mars and Beyond
